How to start motocross in the UK
How a beginner starts motocross in the UK, with coaching or a practice track before a race.
In this guide
Motocross is racing on a purpose-built off-road track, with jumps and fast corners. Before a race, the ACU says coaching or a track day is a good idea, and the AMCA says a practice track is a good start for a beginner.
A first session
The Auto-Cycle Union is the national governing body for motorcycle sport in the British Isles, apart from Northern Ireland.
Before you compete, the ACU says it is a good idea to do some coaching or training, and to ride a test day or a track day. It has coaches and training providers who can help with those first experiences.
The Amateur Motor Cycle Association organises motocross racing. It says riders should already have some experience on a track, and that a practice track is a good start for a beginner.
From 1 January 2026, an ACU junior may compete in the 50cc Automatic class from their 5th birthday, and not before. The AMCA accepts motocross riders from the age of 7. At an ACU event, a youth rider should be able to sit astride the bike and, with one foot firmly on the ground, use the gear lever or the foot brake with the other foot.
What to take
For an ACU event, take an ACU-approved motocross helmet that fits, chest and back protection, motocross boots, motocross kit, and gloves. At the start of a race, wear goggles or a visor that will not splinter. A kidney belt, knee braces and a neck brace are a personal choice.
The AMCA says you bring your own bike.
Our club map shows some UK motocross clubs, and it is a starting point rather than a full list.
If you would like help finding a coach, ESP can match you. The fee is £29.99. Nothing is charged when you send the form. The coach's own fees are separate. We refund the fee if we cannot provide a coach, or if your health means you cannot train. If the student is under 18, we need a guardian's consent, we contact that guardian, and the guardian travels with them.
