Kayaking is sitting in a small boat, legs stretched out in front of you, and moving it with a paddle that has a blade at each end. A beginner starts with a coach, on sheltered water.

A first session

Paddle UK is the national governing body. British Canoeing launched that name in March 2024. Courses and qualifications already held under the old name stayed valid.

A first session is a coached intro. Go Paddling calls it a Paddle Start: one practical session if you have never been in a kayak, or have not been in one for a long time. You learn how to get in and out, how to paddle forwards, and what kit you need. The same session covers what to wear and a few basic paddling skills.

The awarding body says these beginner awards are for sheltered water. They are open to all ages, and there are no prerequisites.

You book it with a club or a course provider. On Go Paddling, the clubs listed are ones affiliated to a national governing body. A course provider may be a single coach or a centre. Ask for that sheltered-water intro. That is the first session.

Kayaks are also used on white water and on the coast. That is not where you start. Go Paddling says there is a boat for those places, and that with practice you can paddle them. It also says you should stay on water you are suitably experienced for, and take a course before you push further.

What to hire

You need a kayak, a paddle with a blade at each end, and a buoyancy aid, the vest that keeps you afloat if you fall in. You do not need to own them for a first go.

A stable sit-on-top is the boat Go Paddling points beginners to. Go Paddling describes a hire centre as a paddling equipment hirer that uses trained, qualified staff. Ask what is included before you turn up, and use their boat, paddle and buoyancy aid. Buy your own only once you know you will come back.

Our club map shows some UK kayaking clubs, and it is a starting point rather than a full list.

If you would like help finding a coach, ESP can match you. The fee is £29.99. Nothing is charged when you send the form. The coach's own fees are separate. We refund the fee if we cannot provide a coach, or if your health means you cannot train. If the student is under 18, we need a guardian's consent, we contact that guardian, and the guardian travels with them.
